Tauranga Disttrict Suburbs
Situated between the Avenues and Greerton, Gate Pa centres around its large new Cameron Road shopping centre. The centre contains a New World supermarket, Mitre 10 Mega store, Spotlight, Fishing Camping and Outdoor store, a bakery, petrol station, gym, butchery, fast food outlets, a pub and other variety stores.
The area has historic significance as the site of a major Maori battle against colonial forces. This battle was fought on 29 April 1864 and was one of a number of engagements fought in the period 1860 - 1872 in what are known as the New Zealand Wars or the Maori Wars. These wars were fought between the native Maori and the British Government which at that time administered New Zealand as a colony. Gate Pa was to be a major defeat for the British at the hands of an out numbered Maori and even today there is no clear reason why this defeat occurred. Today little remains of the Pa itself and on the site of the main redoubt of Gate Pa there is the small Memorial Church of St. George which was built in 1900. Many state houses are located in this area having been developed in the1940’s. Its direct route along Cameron Road to the city, a new shopping centre and its close proximity to Tauranga Hospital and schooling make this area popular with young families and rental investors.
